Abstract Prevalence and Incidence of Diarrhoea caused by Protozoa among Children Of School Age in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria.
A survey was carried out in Ekpoma and Irrua on the incidence of diarrhea in children. A total number of 152 samples were examined using standard techniques. Results showed that 15 samples of the sampled population were positive for protozoal species of -which 10 (10.2%) were from diarrhoic cases and 5 (9.3%) were from non-diarrhoic cases. Protozoal infections were generally low but were found to be more in males than females. The protozoal species obtained were E. histoltica (5.10%) E Coli (4.10%) and G. Lamblia (1.02%) for diarrhoic cases and E. histolytica (1.9%), E. coli (7.4%) and no G. Lamblia were found, for non-diarrhonic cases. This study therefore has shown that protozoa species remain essential causative agents of diarrhea diseases. Government should therefore endeavour to make clean potable water abundant and accessible and sensitize the masses through health care provider, our hands regularly washed before and after any activities.
